Where to take the test and what to bring

Knowledge tests are given at Alberta registry agent offices. The Driver's Guide says the test is available at most registry agent offices.

The official pages do not say whether you need to book the knowledge test in advance. Contact the registry agent office you plan to visit before you go.

Bring acceptable ID to the test. When you apply for an Alberta driver's licence for the first time, the registry agent asks for documents that show who you are, that you live in Alberta, and that you are lawfully entitled to be in or remain in Canada.

The government's examples of proof of identity include a Canadian passport (one that expired less than a year ago is accepted) and a valid Permanent Resident card. Debit and credit cards, Social Insurance Number cards, interim or temporary driver's licences and membership cards are not accepted.

Examples of proof of Alberta residence are a utility bill, a bank or credit card statement, a residential lease or mortgage document, or a signed and dated letter confirming Alberta employment. The document must show your full name and address and be dated less than 90 days before you present it. These lists are examples only, so check with the registry agent.

All documents must be in English or come with a written translation from an approved translator. Applicants from outside Canada and the United States must show suitable immigration documents to be considered Alberta residents.

Applicants under 18 applying for the first time must come with a parent or legal guardian, who shows proof of guardianship and signs a consent form. This is not needed if the applicant shows proof of marriage or self-support.

If you wear glasses or contact lenses, bring them for the vision test.
